I have African hair with a perm. Can I start my dreadlocks now or do I need to grow the perm out first? This question is answered in two parts. The first has to do with Caucasian hair where the term "perming" means to make it curly. The second part is about African or highly texture hair where the term "perming" refers to a treatment to straighten the hair.
Perming will help newly backcombed dreads lock up a bit easier but it's not necessary in any hair type and I'd only recommend it in certain hair types. If your hair is uber coarse, each strand being very thick like Asian hair, then it is advisable. It will certainly lock up without it but the perming will make it easier. Any hairdresser worth their salt knows you just do not DO that with perms, they are potentially damaging enough as is but to over process its BAD news, it will completely break down the protein bonds of the hair leaving it fragile and brittle, take away all it's elasticity, and it will start breaking off like nuts.

It is made by creating hair bonds that make the hair curl. The hair stylist makes the hair into a new shape, using perming rods or rollers, and allows the new shape to develop. Well, there are two things you can do.
You can start now with your relaxer. As your hair grows out, you can trim your relaxed ends over time. What is the cost of getting new dreads? Many people get average size locks, and the work normally takes about 6 hours to complete. NOTE: dreads made well with a crochet hook are locked very tightly and that means they are very hard to get out. Each day comb those dreads out slowly.
