The AC 3 tier is the cheapest of the air-conditioned options. It has three tiers of bunks — upper, middle and lower on one side and two bunks on the other side of the aisle. You are still provided with bedding for overnight trains. Unreliable at times, there are power sockets to charge but you will have to share these with the other passengers.
The washrooms have Western and Indian style toilets, and just like in the 2AC, might get less usable as more people use it.
This is a great way to meet locals who speak considerably good English and to still travel authentically. This is the way most Indians travel and can get quite crowded. Every single train has multiple sleeper class compartments. The sleeper class is very basic and the bathroom hygiene can be below par.
There might be plug points for charging. However, you get a great view of the countryside compared to the AC coaches, where the windows are sealed, tinted, and sometimes dirty. Summer journeys can get hot, but with the ceiling fan and breeze while moving it tends to cool down. During monsoons the windows have to be kept shut so it can get quite stuffy, but the views are the most spectacular. Winter journeys on the other hand can be quite cold so wrap yourself up at night and bring appropriate clothes.
This is a good choice for more adventurous backpackers ready to experience India with the locals. A great way to share stories, songs and food with locals to lighten up the journey. Normally trains making shorter journeys and certain frequently travelled business sectors have AC chair cars. These have a similar layout to an airplane and have overhead space for your luggage. I have seen people not hesitating to pay double the ticket fare 1 for the ticket and 1 one as bribe to the TTE to get the berth allotted in Sleeper class.
So people dont hesitate to pay for getting the comfort. At some point of time, AC coaches should start replacing the sleeper class progressively, so that dust and muck dont enter the coach, and the journey would definitely be pleasant with less noise.
Many trains have now got the unreserved coaches removed quietly. In the same way, this should also be done. Food Provided complimentary Tea and snacks maybe provided complimentary Not Provided Bedding Pillows, sheets and blankets are provided complimentary. Pillows, sheets and blankets are provided complimentary. Bathroom Mostly Clean, with a shower, and even toilet paper roll. Fairly clean. Lacks shower. May or may not be as clean, depending on how many people use it.
Fare Most expensive, fare on par with airlines at times. Less expensive than 1AC but more than 3AC. Cheapest in the ACs, but still more than non-AC. Comments thanks. Depends on which zonal train you go, my experience was with northern and western 1AC is.
No free food or tea at all , whatsoever. Chandigarh to luncknow, and return. Also next birth was general compartment , they were using toilets so it was worst , even on complaint they didn't closed the door permanent, cuz IRCTC sellers move inbetween through it. Also in 3A , bedroll bedsheet and pillow is provided at additional cost of Rs I came to know as they asking while booking. Good clear explanation. Most of them are cushioned bench-style seats, although some newer carriages have individual seats.
There are no sleeping facilities in this class. Carriages are cooled with fans. These days, you'll often find people from General Class who were unable to get confirmed tickets flooding over into the Sleeper Class carriages. The carriages are divided into open-plan compartments with six beds in each. The beds are stacked vertically in three tiers on either side of the compartments.
During the day, the middle beds must be folded down flat against the compartment walls to allow passengers to sit on the lower beds. Two tiers of beds are also located outside the compartments, along the aisle.
Fans on the carriage ceiling provide some cooling, and the windows have bars to keep intruders out as they are usually kept open.
The bathrooms have both western and Indian style toilets. The carriages in 3AC are laid out in the same manner as in Sleeper Class. Bedding and hand towels are provided to passengers. The beds are stacked vertically in two tiers on either side. Just like in the other classes, there are also two tiers of beds along the aisle outside the compartments.
Bedding and towels are also provided, the same as in 3AC. First Class Air Conditioned, known as 1AC, is found only on the most popular inter-state train routes. The cost is around double that of 2AC and is comparable to that of flying. Compartments have lockable doors, carpet and either two or four beds, stacked vertically in tiers. The beds are wider than other classes.
